Throughout my course work, I believe I have achieved Goal 1.
Although I feel I have met this goal by researching topics that are
currently being discussed, I think that this goal is continuously changing and
therefore I will never stop striving to meet this goal in the future.
Research, theories and issues in education are continually changing and as a
teacher, it is very important to me to stay current with these topics.
Understanding how different types of assessment impact my students is one of
my main concerns. I have selected 5 artifacts to prove that I have researched current
practices, theories
and issues in education. My first artifact is an Alternative Assessment Power point. The current trend in education is to use alternative forms of assessment. This theory suggests that we use a variety of assessment types throughout our classrooms. While studying this issue, I discovered that many of the projects I currently do with my students actually fit into the category of alternative assessment. In the past, when I heard the word assessment, I automatically thought of testing. Now I realize that assessment includes anything that shows us that a student is learning the objectives that we have set. By allowing our students to show us what they know through various activities, I think they will actually learn the information better and remember it longer. In the past, students might just memorize the material for a paper/pencil test, and then forget the information. After researching alternative forms of assessment, I have decided that we need to provide our students with a variety of assessment forms because everyone learns differently, therefore no one form is "best". My second artifact is my "Boys vs. Girls" research paper . For this project, I researched some of the general differences between the learning styles of a boy vs. the learning styles of a girl. This research was very interesting to me as a teacher, but also as a parent. I will continue to research and study this theory in the future. Our school is considering some single sex classrooms for next year. I will be on a committee to determine if our 8th grade class should be split into one section of boys and one section of girls for a couple of periods during the day. We will be analyzing the benefits of the split, and then we will decide if we should go ahead with the split. If we do decide to split this class, I will continue to keep statistics on this class and determine if we should continue the single sex classrooms for our junior high students. I am very interested to see if test scores improve in the areas in which they are split. My third artifact is a continuation of my research in this area. I created a PowerPoint presentation highlighting the important points of my research paper to be used as my showcase item. This PowerPoint describes some general differences between boys and girls, and emphasizes the fact that everyone learns differently. My fourth artifact demonstrates the importance of multicultural education. Multicultural education is a current issue in education that is becoming an issue even in our small rural schools. Before my studies in this area, I did not think that this was something that I needed to be concerned with because I taught in a small, rural school. I quickly found out that it is very important to be aware of these issues. I would like to provide my students with more information about this issue in the future and help them become more aware the different cultures. My final artifact is my personal educational philosophy. This paper shows my research into the area of educational theories and teaching styles. While researching for this project, I was reminded that there are numerous ideas and theories out there, but I don't perfectly match any one style. It was very interesting for me to analyze each of the philosophical orientations and figure out how I fit into each one of them. I have discovered that I most closely match the styles of a progressive teacher, and I agree with many of the ideas stated by John Dewey. Writing my philosophy was a very thought provoking assignment, and it made me look closely at how I view myself as a teacher. Overall, these artifacts demonstrate the fact that I understand the importance of research into the current practices, theories and issues in education. I know that I need to remain current in education and continue to research educational issues to be an effective teacher. |
