Chester Area School is very current with their use of technology in education.  Being a part of such an up to date school is very important to me.  The administration and community along with the staff understand the importance of staying current with the use of technology.  We are currently a part of the lap top initiative, therefore all of our high school students were provided with a tablet pc to use throughout the school year.  As with all new projects, there were some set backs and some problems, but overall, I believe the tablets are a very important part of our students’ education.  We were provided one week of training, but the real learning process was by actually using them in my classroom.

My first artifact is an instructional manual for uploading assignments to WebCT, so that my students could complete their assignments, and then submit them back to me to be graded and returned.  As we started using computers in the classroom, the students were excited to do their assignments using their stylus and submitting them over the internet.  I created the instructional manual to help myself, but I also wanted to help the other teachers become successful with using the computers as well.  This training manual provides evidence that I know how to upload assignments, but it also shows that I know how to use technology to create a manual for others to learn from.

My second artifact is a folder of various presentations that I have created for classroom use.  These are PowerPoints that I created as note taking templates.  The PowerPoint that the students can upload on their computer (ending in CT) does not contain all of the bulleted items, so as we go through the PowerPoint in class, they will have the opportunity to complete their notes from my completed presentation.  I will display the notes using SmartBoard technology.  As we proceed through the PowerPoints, students will have the opportunity to come up to the smart board and complete problems or add information when necessary.  The Smart Board is very interactive, and keeps the student’s attention better than the traditional note taking process.  As we are discussing the flow of blood through the body, we can quickly go to the website containing an interactive diagram of the heart and the direction of blood flow.  These types of websites and other computer simulations are an important part of a student’s education.  The use of current technology is an important part of my classroom environment.

I would like to use my electronic portfolio as my final artifact.  Using technology to create a portfolio is a current trend in education and I hope to be able to incorporate some type of portfolio in my science classes.  Creating an electronic portfolio proves that I have technology background as well as the ability to learn more about new technology.  It was very exciting to create this project and I am proud of how it finally came to completion.  These artifacts are evidence that I feel technology in education is an important part of every students education.
